About the illustration

I think he looks like Dean Martin, but maybe that’s just me. This was a thinner lined illustration, the lines I make in the reproduction tend to be even thinner because when I trace I’m drawing within the original lines. After I finished my “inks” I made a thicker outline around the illustration to make it look even more comic book like, it also helps the image maintain it’s look after it’s been converted to a vector.

Mike Arens

Mike Arens was a classic American Disney artist. Like many of the future comic artists, Arens started his career at Disney in the animation studios. He turned to comics in the early 1950s, doing funny animal, adventure and western strips for Dell Publishing.

Under the Disney label, he did ‘Davy Crockett’, ‘Mary Poppins’, ‘Chip’n’Dale’, ‘Donald Duck’ and ‘Scamp’. Other Dell titles include ‘Range Rider’, ‘Roy Rogers’, ‘The Frontiersman’, ‘Tarzan’, ‘Korak’ and ‘My Favourite Martian’.

He was the artist of the daily ‘Scamp’ comic from 1969 to his death in 1976. His other newspaper comic credits include ‘Hey Mac’ (daily, 1951-1962) and ‘Roy Rogers’ (Sunday page, 1957-1962). He was also an animator at Hanna-Barbera.
